Berlin Re:furnished

Thursday 15th May - Saturday 17th May 2025, Backhaus Projects, Neukölln, Berlin. Part of the official Berlin Design Week 2025.

"Berlin Re:furnished" was a solo exhibition that consisted of furniture pieces made from existing (read: recycled and repurposed) materials that New Zealand designer, Angharad Summers, designed and made to furnish her apartment after moving to Berlin. In Germany, many big brands dominate the furniture market, giving independent designer-makers little chance to compete. However, although these brands offer low prices and convenience, they are often made from low quality materials - chipboard with veneer at best, sometimes only paper foil. This exhibition will show how it is possible to design, and make beautiful and unique furniture pieces without exploiting virgin materials. From decking timber or an old bed frame to factory offcuts, much "waste" is simply waiting for someone to rescue it and give it a new life.
